North-East Recycling Firm Awarded ISO Standards

A North-East recycling company has been awarded ISO 9001 and 14001 accreditations.

Keenan Recycling is a family run business based in Aberdeenshire, that recycles green waste and food waste into BSI accredited compost. The award winning £3.2million facility at New Deer hosts the biggest vertical composting unit in Europe.

ISO 9001 is an international standard for quality management systems and has only been achieved by around 5% of UK businesses. The standard will ensure that Keenan Recycling consistently provides a service that meet customer needs and regulatory requirements.

The ISO 14001 will ensure that Keenan Recycling will continue to operate an environmentally friendly service and will enhance the company’s environmental credentials.

Environmental and Compliance Manager for Keenan Recycling, Kat Laakso, said:

“To be awarded these internationally recognised standards is a great achievement for the company and confirms that Keenan Recycling offers a quality and environmentally friendly service for the North-East. By the nature of our business it’s vital that Keenan Recycling is also focused on protecting the environment.”

The awards come following their recent launch of a new commercial food waste scheme for local businesses which has been backed by First Minister Alex Salmond as part of the Scottish Government’s Zero Waste Plan to target Scotland’s growing waste problem.

The scheme, which collects items such as leftover food, coffee grounds, cups and paper towels from businesses and restaurants in the North-East, is the first of its kind in the area.
