An award-winning North-east organics recycling firm has succeeded in securing two finalist positions in one of Aberdeen’s most high profile awards.
Keenan Recycling has been selected as contenders in the Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce Northern Star Business Awards in both the overall small business and green award categories.
Launched in 2001, the firm run by brothers Grant and Gregor Keenan, transforms food and garden waste into BSI (British Standard) accredited compost at an award winning £5m facility at New Deer in Aberdeenshire, which is one of the largest facilities of its kind in the world.
The organics recycling company deals with tens of thousands of tonnes of food and green waste from local authorities all over Scotland and also offers a recycling service to businesses and food processors with green targets. The commercial collection scheme was the first of its kind in the North-east allowing local organisations to recycle items such as leftover food, coffee grounds, cups and paper towels.
By January 2014 all businesses in Scotland producing more than 50kg of food waste per week will have to separate it for recycling.
The Northern Star Awards is one of Scotland’s biggest award ceremonies, with 38 finalists across 13 categories. Around 840 guests are expected to attend this year’s event in October, being hosted by journalist, broadcaster and writer Sally Magnusson.
Keenan Recycling is facing competition from two other North-east businesses in each category. The small business category will be awarded to a company with excellent practice, which is an inspiration to all small businesses attaining market prominence. While the green award recognises a business that has implemented a strategy to reduce the impact it makes on the environment or is involved in providing alternative energy supplies.
Managing Director of Keenan Recycling, Grant Keenan said:
“The Northern Star awards is a high profile event for the North-east and to be selected as finalists for two awards is fantastic. The North-east boasts many successful businesses and these awards always attract very high profile entries so we are honoured to have achieved two finalist positions.”
The Northern Star Awards are taking place on 11 October at Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre. Grant and Gregor Keenan have also been shortlisted in the Ernst & Young Scotland Entrepreneur of the Year 2012, which will be announced on June 21st.
