Recycling Food Waste: What’s In It For You?

If you’re a restaurant owner, or run a cafe or bar you may be wondering, with the introduction of the Food Waste Regulations, what the benefit is for your business. Here’s the good news: done correctly, recycling food waste has several advantages for your operations and is net positive on an efficiency and economic basis.

IT SAVES YOU MONEY

The alternative to recycling is putting it in general waste which gets sent to landfill – the most expensive option for your company’s waste. As of April 2016 a tonne of food waste will be at least £50 cheaper to recycle than sending it to landfill. Processing facilities for food waste recycling are also becoming more numerous at the same time as landfills are filling up. The long term outlook is landfill will become increasingly expensive – a cost which gets passed onto you. Find out how one of our customers reduced general waste by 75% after introducing a food waste recycling service.

COMPLYING WITH LEGISLATION

Whilst this may be more stick than carrot the incentive here is to remain compliant and avoid a large fine! The “Scottish Environment Protection Agency are responsible for enforcing Scottish recycling duties. In their words

Persistent non-compliance will be addressed through duty of care enforcement procedures and may be liable to:
– on summary conviction, to a fine of up to £10,000
– on conviction on indictment, to an unlimited fine

ENVIRONMENTAL CREDENTIALS AS A COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE

Businesses which embed sustainability within their day-to-day operations are better placed to take advantage of the rise in customer expectation for “making money whilst doing something good for the world”. Profit margins and environmental initiatives are no longer incompatible terms within business and can be turned to your advantage. For example, The Bay Fish and Chips received the highest accreditation from the Sustainable Restaurant Association after introducing a food waste collection scheme showing you can do good and do well at the same time.
