Keenan Recycling Sustainability Update 2025: Powering a circular future
At Keenan Recycling, we’ve always believed food waste should never go to waste. What many see as “rubbish,” we see as fuel for the future — fuel for homes, businesses, vehicles, and most importantly, for a cleaner planet.
That belief is at the heart of our Sustainability Update 2025, where we’re proud to share the progress we’ve made and the bold steps we’re taking to accelerate the UK’s transition to net zero, especially as 2025 food waste regulations reshape how organisations across the country manage their waste.
Driving change, one collection at a time
When we launched our national food waste collections, our mission was clear: transform waste into a resource, and give businesses a simple way to be part of the circular economy.
Today, that mission is being delivered on a scale we could only imagine a few years ago. In 2021, our fleet was powered entirely by fossil diesel. By the end of 2025, 23% of our vehicles will run on sustainable alternatives including biomethane, HVO, battery electric, and hydrogen. Each truck we switch reduces harmful emissions, improves air quality, and demonstrates that sustainable transport is not a distant ambition — it’s a reality today.
And that’s just one part of the story. In 2025, we’re on track to empty 1.5 million food waste bins, up from 845,000 in 2021. That’s 78% growth in just four years — growth powered not just by scale, but by businesses choosing to go beyond compliance and partner with us to make a measurable impact.
If your business is searching for food waste collections near me, Keenan Recycling is here to provide a local, compliant, and low-carbon solution, backed by nationwide expertise.
Turning food waste into energy
What happens after we collect a bin is where the real magic happens. Through anaerobic digestion, the food waste we collect is transformed into clean, renewable energy.
This year, that energy is expected to reach 20,320 MWh — enough to power nearly 8,000 homes for a year. To put it another way, the waste we collect could power a town the size of Exmouth. Even better, some of that energy is used to fuel our very own fleet of biomethane trucks, creating a closed-loop system that proves circularity in action.
Enthusiasm behind the mission
As Fergus Healy, our Head of Strategic Development & Net Zero, explains: “The Sustainability Update reflects progress we have made and intend to make over the remainder of 2025. Our commitment to investing in low-carbon fleets and expanding circular solutions shows that the transition to net zero is happening now and Keenan is proud to be leading the way.”
Fergus is a passionate believer in the circular economy. Under his guidance, we’ve accelerated the shift to a fleet powered by biomethane, hydrogen, and HVO, and he remains steadfast in ensuring that every mile we drive takes us closer to a low-carbon future.
Beyond carbon: measuring what matters
Sustainability isn’t just about tonnes of CO₂ avoided (though in 2025 alone, our work prevented 44,000 tonnes of emissions — the equivalent of 16,000 long-haul flights). It’s about social value too.
We’ve developed a Social Value Matrix that helps us measure the broader impact of what we do — from supplier engagement to employee volunteering. Every one of our people gets two paid volunteering days each year, empowering them to support causes that matter to their communities. Because we believe change doesn’t just happen at the organisational level. It happens when individuals are given the tools to make a difference.
Landmark partnership with Pizza Hut
One highlight of 2025 has been our partnership with Pizza Hut, the largest national contract in our history. Since July 2024, we’ve collected more than 189 tonnes of food waste from their restaurants, preventing 130 tonnes of greenhouse gases from reaching the atmosphere. Instead, that waste powered homes and reduced transport emissions by six tonnes in just two months.
It’s proof that when big brands embrace sustainable food waste management, the results can be truly transformational.
Through our industry-leading carbon reporting tools, we give customers the data they need to see the difference they’re making — from site-specific CO₂ reductions to emissions per collection. This isn’t just reporting. It’s empowerment. It allows businesses to align their own Scope 3 emissions strategies with real, measurable outcomes.
Our Net Zero commitment
We’ve already reduced carbon intensity per truck by 21% since 2021, and we’re not stopping there. With investments in biomethane, BEVs, hydrogen, and smarter logistics, we’re showing that the journey to net zero is both achievable and commercially viable.
Our accreditations — from SBTi alignment to ISO 14064-1 certification — demonstrate that our actions are backed by science, transparency, and accountability.
Fuel for the future
From pioneering low-carbon transport to powering homes with food waste, Keenan Recycling is proud to be at the forefront of the UK’s circular economy revolution.
But this isn’t just our journey — it’s one we share with every customer, partner, and community we serve. Every bin collected is a step towards a more sustainable future.
Together, we’re not just reducing the CO₂st of food waste, we’re building a legacy of clean energy, circularity, and social impact.
